Monterey County Weekly Cover and Holiday Guide

Monterey County Weekly Holiday Guide 2013

I was recently asked to illustrate a couple of covers for this week's Monterey County Weekly's issue and holiday guide. I have never been to Monterey Bay but I love aquatic mammals and birds more than just about anything. Thanks to AD Karen Loutzenheiser from pretty much giving me free reign on these.

Monterey County Weekly Holiday Cover

I'm not usually feeling very festive this time of year but for some reason I think this year I'm into it all., except the cold, I can't deal with the cold.

Reading Comics in the Park

Reading Comics In The Park

"Reading Comics in the Park" for Light Grey Art Lab’s 6Degrees show. It’s a show about connections and everyone made postcards about who they are, where they live, things they do. For me I combined one of my favorite places in Seattle in Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill, and one of my favorite things reading comics in public.

There’s an opening reception this friday 12/6 at 7 PM at the Light Grey Art Lab, more info about that here. Prints of this are available here.

"Mrs. Shelley’s Class Grade 2"

Mrs. Shelley's Class Grade 2 This is my piece for Crowded Teeth and Friends Present: A Magical Landshow at Leanna Linn’s Wonderland. The show opens this Friday and the theme was fall related/autumnal equinox/ or night/day.
Even though I don’t work in a school anymore fall for me still means back to school (well that and cider, doughnuts, and pumpkin everything) and I’m pretty sure if you ask my friends they’re tell you that this is how they think I see all children.

Jason vs. the Hydra

Jason vs the Hydra
Jason vs. the Hydra for Silver Screen Society's July movie "Jason and the Argonauts". Everybody always talks about the skeleton monsters from this movie but I think that the hydra with all of the heads moving independently is just as impressive.

The Persimmion Sequence

The Persimmion Sequence for Light Grey Art Lab Station Zero Show If you’re in the Minneapolis area make sure to check out the Station Zero show at Lightgrey Art Lab opening this Friday at 7 where you can see my reinterpretation of the cover for the retro sci-fi novel "The Persimmion Sequence". You can also purchase copies of the print and loads of others in their online shop. The book may not have been the most exciting story ever but I can assure you that it does contact apes with transplanted brains, giant evil computers and exploring planets filled with crystals. Just in case you're curious I've included the original cover below.

Adventure Time: Candy Capers #1 San Diego Comicon Exclusive Variant

Adventure Time: Candy Capers #1 San Diego Comicon Exclusive Varient

I am very excited to finally be able to share this, this is my cover for Boom Studios Adventure Time mini-series Candy Capers written by Yuta Ota, Ananth Panagariya. This was originally going to be for a later issue in the series but I found out recently that it was selected to be a San Diego Comicon Exclusive for Awesome Conventions with a limited run of only 500 copies. You can preorder a copy here or stop by their table. Seriously though shout out to the folks at Boom who are doing amazing things and letting cool people contribute to their projects.

Also on a personal note, I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way that I can come and hang out and do a signing but am having some trouble tracking down a place to stay, everything seems pretty much completely book already so if anyone know somewhere that has space or I can crash for a night or two let me know.

Kinect App Heads

Yesterday I took part in an event at the Bellevue Microsoft store with a group of coder/developers building a Kinect app. Over the course of the afternoon we built an app that would replace your head with a character head and animate your speech in real time. These are the heads that I built, I put the various frames together in a gif so you can see them in action.

Summer at Cornish 2013

I know it’s only May but if you are a high school student (ages 15-18) who thinks that spending the summer inside drawing rad things and watching cartoons sounds way better than a job at the ice cream hut or babysitting your little brother or if you know of someone else who fits that criteria I’d like to suggest the Summer At Cornish Precollege Program from July 8-August 2nd where I happen to be teaching a Sequential Design and Illustration course

Last year we had a blast and some of the things coming out of the class included a biker dude prince charming, multi-colored bats dripping with disease and a sea captain literally sword planting a torpedo into a submarine. I can vouch for the fact that most if not all students left the class with portfolio worthy work based on real life assignments.
You do not need to live in Seattle to take part of this, I know for a fact housing is available and they even do extra programming for the students living on campus. Also if you register and pay before Friday May 3rd you’ll get a 10% discount on the course

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Let's Get Busy

Let's Get Busy

I had a request to draw some Busytown and since I had a break between projects I thought I'd go for it. I really like Richard Scarry's books, especially the more painted style ones like I Am A Bunny.

If you have requests you can submit them via the ask button on my tumblr, I'm not always able to do it and I can't guarantee a quick turnaround but if I have time I'll try.

Summer Camp

VT Kids March 2013 Cover

I was very excited to be asked to illustrate the cover for the March issue of VT Kids, which happened to be their their summer camp issue.

The cover was to reflect an article about several sorts of summer camps including computer camp, horse back riding camp, gymnastics camp, sailing camp and wizard camp. I wish that wizard camp had been an option when I was a kid.

I've always been kind of fascinated by summer camp, I went to scout camp as a child but it's not quite the same as what I've been lead to believe summer camp is all about based on some of my favorite media portrayals such as Happy Campers, Wet Hot American Summer and Salute Your Shorts.

It's been a while since I made a comic so I though it was about time and I knew I wanted to do more with the drawing of Wendy from last fall

Also this weekend is the Emerald City Comicon which I'm pretty excited about and I wanted to have something new ready for the con. I won't have a booth but I will be attending and hopefully meeting some really great comic people. I'll carrying around copies of this so if you find me at the con I'll have some to give away. A reminder that I look more or less like this
