I Want To Eat Your Books Story Time and Book Signing 10/31

I am very excited to announce that I will be at Powell’s City of Books in Portland OR at 11AM on October 31st for their Halloween Kid’s Storytime. I’ll be reading and signing copies of my new book “I Want To Eat Your Books” from Sky Pony Press as well as doing a drawing demonstration on drawing monsters. When I lived in Oregon I would spend pretty much every Sunday at Powell’s so it’s a real honor to be invited, if you live in nearby stop by and see me awkwardly try to interact with kids.

Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel

I haven’t done a lot of commissions lately but I had one coming in from someone who wanted to fill their soon to arrive baby’s room with kid friendly comic stuff with a focus on strong female characters for a Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel portrait. Between the subject manner and the reasoning behind it how could I say no. 

G. Willow Wilsons Ms. Marvel is one of the books that I look forward to the most every month, I am so excited that it’s been such a success. It’s such a fun and smart book and it’s just refreshing to see a book that isn’t just another grim white dude doing grim white dude things.

Pizza-Roll for Initiative

Hard to believe Emerald City Comicon is this weekend already, feels like last years wasn’t all that long ago but I guess that happens when you’re especially busy. Anyways another con meant time to shun human contact for a week or so and bust out a new mini comic promo. I didn’t get a table this year so I’ll most be wandering around trying to awkwardly talk to people that I internet know. If you happen to see me feel free to say hi right now I still look vaguely like this but signifigantly more beardy.

Felt right to bring Eleanor back for another adventure. Was trying to figure out what the story would be so I started by making a list of things that are awesome, it had stuff that made it in like crystals, atlantis, pizza rolls and fishmen and thing that unfortunately will have to wait for another day like brains in jars, dinosaurs and goth kids. 

A Feast Fit for a King

Things have been pretty busy with long term projects so I haven’t gotten to share anything in a while but here’s something new. This is my piece “A Feast Fit for a King” for Light Grey Art Lab’s “Boss Rush” show in Minneapolis if you happen to be in the area. The show celebrates how awesome video game villains are and how they should win more often. How could I resist going with the best giant hammer wielding penguin monarch around, King Dedede, although I’m not sure he’s a villains so much as a guy who’s just hungry and Kirby gets in the way. He’s also one of my favorite characters to play as in Smash Bros.

Nap-A-Roo Board Book

Here's a project that I can finally share with all of you, this past winter I was asked to illustrate a board book for KPO Creative call "Nap-a-Roo" written by  Kristy Kurjan and you can now purchase a copy via amazon (both in Kindle or physical version) or the iTunes store. It's a cute little story about kangaroos and naps.

And so to celebrate it's release I'm going to be doing a giveaway of a physical copy of 2 copies of the book on via tumblr and on via twitter. To enter all you need to do is to like and reblog this post on my tumblr or retweet the tweet announcing this (because I assume you're following me on twitter too so you can hear about my lunch or what weird things I've found in thrift stores lately.) To Old Friends, Wherever You Are

I got the okay to share this earlier this morning. This is my piece for Light Grey Art Lab’s “Animystics” show. You can purchase prints of this in their shop and a portion of the proceeds from all sales from this show goes to support Feline Rescue Inc, Homeward Bound Dog Rescue, and the Animal Humane Society

To quote the gallery: ”Animystics is a celebration and homage of our furry friends, companions, and spirit animals. From ancient history to mythology, real life pets to legendary creatures, the exhibition recognizes the importance and impact of these animals throughout our lives.”

I used to make these little plush toys I called messenger penguins which were little stuffed penguins with wings that I would send to people with notes which was kind of the inspiration for this piece. I was also really into the idea of penguins traveling for miles to get back to their families (ala March of the Penguins), I've moved around a lot in the past decade or so and so I think about the little pockets of people I have around the world and letting them know I’m still out here.

Here There Be Sprinkles

Emerald City Comicon is this weekend and so that meant it was time to bang out a new minicomic to give out. I don’t have a table this year so I’ll just be wandering around being a nerd. If you happen to see me (reminder I look more or less like this) say hi, I’ll have a bunch of copies printed to give away and I’ll try to not be completely socially inept. I've

been meaning to do something with the character forever, and last week I finally figure out something and then proceeded to drive myself crazy trying to finish this in time. This probably won’t be the last you see of her. Also Cake doughnut are better than yeast doughnuts.

This has been sitting on my desktop for a while so I thought I’d go ahead and finish it. It may have started as a valentines day thing that got pushed way down because of real work.

You Can't Send a Gorilla into Space

Here are some facts:

I was recently asked to contribute a piece to the Supahcute Science Fair show at Leanna Lin's Wonderland and as a science dork I was pretty excited to be a part of the show. This is something I've actually been kicking around for a little while and this was a great reason to finally develop it. The show opens Saturday, March 8 from 6-10pm at  Leanna Lin’s Wonderland in Los Angeles with music by DJ Laminlove and sweets by Auntie Apple and Amara Kitchen, so if you happen to be in LA you should stop by.

VTKids Feb. 2014 Cover

I’m not sure if he’s more terrified by racing down the steep hill or her romantic intentions.

I recently was asked to provide the cover for this month’s issue of VTKids. Since it’s February and apparently some places get snow this time of year they wanted something wintry and playing into the whole upcoming valentines day thing. Plus it worked out that they had a feature article on the best sledding spots in Vermont.

Monterey County Weekly Cover and Holiday Guide

I was recently asked to illustrate a couple of covers for this week's Monterey County Weekly's issue and holiday guide. I have never been to Monterey Bay but I love aquatic mammals and birds more than just about anything. Thanks to AD Karen Loutzenheiser from pretty much giving me free reign on these.



I'm not usually feeling very festive this time of year but for some reason I think this year I'm into it all., except the cold, I can't deal with the cold.

Reading Comics in the Park

"Reading Comics in the Park" for Light Grey Art Lab’s 6Degrees show. It’s a show about connections and everyone made postcards about who they are, where they live, things they do. For me I combined one of my favorite places in Seattle in Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill, and one of my favorite things reading comics in public.

I didn't have my normal texture brushes on this computer so I was playing around with Kyle's Ultimate Brush Set today, so here's a Sheriff Wolf. These things are magic, definitely going to keep playing with them, go give him money today.
